Love and the Turning 12 months features a choice from the
Yueh Fu―people songs from the Six Dynasties Interval (fourth-fifth centuries A.D.). Many of the songs are easy, erotic lyrics. Some are attributed to legendary courtesans, whereas others could have been sung at harvest festivals or marriage celebrations. Along with the folks songs, Rexroth provides a large sampling of Chinese language verse: works by 60 totally different poets, from the third century to our personal time. Rexroth at all times translated Chinese language poetry―as he mentioned―“solely to please myself.” And he created, with outstanding success, English variations which stand as poems in their very own proper.
