Within the 1980’s, this indigenous Mayan neighborhood was ravaged by the Guatemalan civil warfare, and the world’s financial system was destroyed. Many inhabitants misplaced their farms and migrated to the Guatemalan coast to seek for work. In 1992, various small-scale household farmers of the Maya-Popti indigenous group united to take management of the manufacturing and export of the espresso crops. By forming a cooperative, the “Asociacion GUAYA’B”, the farmers hoped to make espresso farming sustainable and worthwhile for the neighborhood.
